The Cowichan River is producing good to excellent trout fishing for fly anglers. Some days an fisher will see only a few other anglers, but there are days when the water will be full of hopeful participants. Rainbows are still a little dark from the spring spawn, but they are full of energy. A 4 or 5 weight rod will give you plenty of action. #14 Elk Hair Caddis waked will produce some dry fly action.
Small lakes are produce fishing opportunities in most of the south and mid island regions. Some of the best options are in urban areas.
Cutthroat trout remain an option and have come into the estuaries to feed on Chum fry. As you might assume, Chum fry patterns can produce excellent results.
